Why Soma Records matters to techno

When you trace the history of British techno, Glasgow’s Soma Records is difficult to ignore. Established in 1991, the independent imprint helped build a lasting route between the city’s electronic scene and the wider techno world. Its first catalogue release, Eterna / I.B.O., paired Slam with Rejuvination, and the early label established a space for music that was serious about both sound design and the dancefloor.

Soma’s catalogue is not confined to one narrow interpretation of the genre. It has supported records spanning stripped-back percussion, deeper hypnosis, industrial intensity and more experimental electronic forms. For producers researching a possible fit, that breadth is useful only when paired with careful listening: a historical Soma classic does not necessarily represent what the label is releasing now.

What Soma released in 2026

In 2026, Soma marked its 35th anniversary with a series of remixes connecting different generations of techno. Its own announcements describe the SOMA35 project, including reinterpretations of work by Slam and Surgeon, as well as newer music from ANNĒ and the DRUMTRAX series. These records are useful listening references for the label’s contemporary production standards and musical range.

For a listening shortlist, compare a recent Slam percussion release with ANNĒ’s Sleepwalkers and the SOMA35 reinterpretations. Notice the treatment of low-end weight, rhythmic space and variation over time before assuming your track belongs on the label.

Can artists send demos to Soma?

Soma is not currently looking to sign new artists. The official contact page nevertheless says the team may listen to a short message and a private SoundCloud link containing your two strongest tracks. It explicitly asks producers not to send download links, audio files or attachments. That is a limited listening policy, not an open call or a guarantee that someone will respond.
