After a long break, we are back with a new interview with Vass Nikoloff from Northern Impact, an active project in London’s underground techno scene.

Who Is Vass Nikoloff?

Bulgarian born Vass Nikoloff has been involved with electronic dance music for many years. After being born in 1989, he already came into a world where Techno and House were evolving.

After leaving Bulgaria for Norway in 2014, he dived into the club scene. By March 2017 he began experimenting with the art of mixing music after.

His favourite genres range from Tech House, Minimal and Acid to straight-up Techno. But he “has good taste in playing some serious music”.

Over the years before Vass laid hands on a pair of decks, he had been to countless electronic music events.

He would be seen as one of the loudest, euphoric and enthusiastic individuals at the party.

2017 could be seen as a turning point in Vass’s life, and after a short time behind the mixer’s controls, people could tell that he possessed talent and a fresh style.

In 2018 he moved to the UK in search of something bigger and a quest to develop himself as an artist.

His new ventures in London have seen him play sets to audiences all around the city in the name of Northern Impact (an underground concept of which Vass is the leader dedicated to the sound of techno #TECHNO). Today you can catch him at his residency for Werkhaus (Café 1001).

How did Northern Impact start?

It all started in Trondheim, Norway. The first-ever Northern Impact event was on December 9, 2017, in a place called ”Red Zone nightclub”.

The party was great, and we were ready for that step, so I decided to organise one event every month to build up the town’s electronic music scene.

People in the city needed this.

Has the name Northern Impact got anything to do with it starting in Norway?

Yes, absolutely. The meaning of the concept, in the beginning, was to bring Norwegian artists in Bulgaria and Bulgarian artists in Norway.

We had some extraordinary events in this way that people still talking about.

Why have you chosen London for your headquarters?

In the summer of 2018, I was invited to play on a secret event here in London. That was going to be my first performance in the UK. I was really excited!

The person who invited me was an excellent friend of mine, and at that time I worked for his project called ”Rave Together BG”.

The party itself was an unforgettable experience.

In the beginning, there was a bit of chaos. We had to change the location because of some people who had settled in the planned place.

So, we travelled all over London one more time and went to the new area.

I calmed down there because at first, I thought I wouldn’t be able to play. Everything happened at once.

People were waiting on their feet for the installation of the stage. When the opening DJ started the music, people exploded, and the atmosphere became incomparable.

I played almost at the end of the party, and I had terrific times behind the decks. People loved my set, and I loved the way they showed it to me.

That was when I decided to move to London and look for my professional development in the electronic scene. There is only one sad aspect – me and the organiser of this event are no longer in friendship.

I would be very grateful if we could ever be friends again. He is a good person, and I miss him.

What’s Up London: 10 Underground Electronic Music Venues

Where do your inspirations come from?

Before I was getting my inspiration from iconic Bulgarian places such as Dance Club Mania in Sunny Beach and Plazma Club in Plovdiv, some of the people who built the electronic scene in Bulgaria 10-15 years ago. Pacho & Pepo, Shoto, Veselin, Andrez, and Steven.

They are part of the pioneers in my country, and they were the people who made me fall in love with electronic music.

Nowadays I’m getting my inspiration from my sis Kamelia. She is a real example of how to work correctly and how to succeed in starting from zero.

What do you think of the Bulgarian techno scene?

Bulgaria’s scene is on the right level and is concentrated mainly in the capital, Sofia, and the other two big cities Plovdiv and Varna.

There are some talented artists in my country who pushing the scene forward.

What is your favourite part of being a DJ? Playing Gigs? Creating music? Organizing Parties?

I love every single detail of being an artist. If the ravers are satisfied – that’s the best reward for me.

I’m working for them.

Which event do you look back on with the most pride?

”Funatorium 6” at Werkhaus (Cafe 1001) in November 2019. At that event, we organized a Christmas charity donation for a random orphanage house in Bulgaria.

Many people came and donated founds. It was wonderful! We gift an exceptional Christmas celebration for children in need…

Tell me a bit more about your sound and your crew?

Our event is a mixture of different Techno sub-genres. The start is always calm and gradating with the time to hard in the end. We are 10 people in the crew – 6 DJs (VeselinPetroff, Zhanna, General G, Lau.Tastic, me and Kamelia) and 4 promoters (Monika, Elena, Aleksandra, and Daria).

This is our team. I love each of them very much, and I wanna use that moment to say ”thank you guys for doing the job so well! The best is yet to come”.

What are your favourite venues you go to get the best techno music in London?

I love to attend Minimal Force events in Werkhaus, Apocalypto nights in Egg London and I am a new fan of Jaded in Corsica Studios. I also can’t wait to attend Rave Signal. A newly created concept in London that will debut after the pandemic. They have a good vision and a great vibe.

What type of feedback do you normally get from the Northern Impact audience?

Always brilliant!
