Diving Deep into the Genesis EP
Track by Track: A Spiritual Exploration
Attunement
The opening track, “Attunement,” sets the spiritual tone of the Genesis EP, inviting listeners into a space of profound introspection and clarity. Utilizing a complex blend of synths and ethereal soundscapes, it mirrors the process of aligning one’s inner vibrations with the universe. The track is a journey in itself, starting with subtle, ambient noises that gradually build into a powerful, immersive auditory experience.
Wake
“Wake” shifts the mood with its vibrant, pulsating rhythms that symbolize the awakening of consciousness. The track combines dynamic beats with introspective melodies, creating a contrast that reflects the sudden moments of awareness and enlightenment. It’s an energetic call to consciousness, encouraging listeners to open their eyes to the world’s hidden depths.
Totality
“Totality,” the final track, encapsulates the essence of completeness and universal oneness. It’s a masterful blend of soaring melodies and deep basslines, conveying a sense of reaching a peak spiritual state. The track’s progression from calm introspection to a powerful crescendo mirrors the journey to achieving total spiritual integration.
Standout Moments in Genesis: Breaking Down the Crescendos
The crescendos in each track of the Genesis EP are carefully crafted to elevate the listener’s experience, marking pivotal moments in the spiritual journey the EP narrates.
In “Attunement,” the crescendo emerges mid-track as layers of sound build upon each other, simulating the rising awareness within the listener. “Wake” uses its crescendo to break from the introspective flow, representing an explosive moment of consciousness with a burst of rhythmic energy.
Finally, “Totality” reaches its crescendo as it concludes the EP, with a powerful blend of synths and percussion that feels like a spiritual climax, leaving the listener in a state of awe and completeness. Each crescendo not only enhances the musical narrative but also symbolizes different stages of spiritual awakening, making the Genesis EP a truly transformative experience.
Behind the Scenes With Motion Colors | The Making of Genesis EP
Interviews with Motion Colors
What initially inspired the concept for the “Genesis EP”?
I’ve been making music for quite some time and my general trajectory was in this general area. This past year I sat down and told myself I would intentionally focus on making a track that had a really detailed composition and take it to that next level of production. Attunement, the first track on the EP was born and it was a light bulb moment, really the first track I made that went beyond and into a territory I wasn’t exactly used to. I felt I had really found my sound and developed the sound I always wanted.
Can you describe the moment or idea that sparked the creation of this EP?
I think it was hearing the track attunement in the early stages of production and I felt like I could hear something coming out of it. It was still really rough and since there were so many layers/tracks and elements going into it, the mix was hard to hear, but I felt like seeing it through to completion was going to bring about a good track.
How do you describe the sound and style of “Genesis EP”?
I guess the best way to put it is cinematic. I didn’t intentionally try for that in the beginning. Just trying to make some blissed-out spiritual sounding bass electronica.
What themes or narratives were you exploring in this EP?
Trying to make something spiritual.
Could you share some insights into the tools and technologies used in producing the “Genesis EP”?
It’s a combination of synths and samples mixed together. Ableton, lots of Serum as my main synth and some Ableton operator. Tons of stock Ableton reverb, delay, eq8 and saturator. The Waves vitamin sonic for getting things extra presence in certain areas of the frequency spectrum. My producing/composing generally spills into mixing so I focus on making fine-tuned adjustments along the way. Those fine-tuned dry/wet finesses really add up along the way. I think that is one of the most important things.
Were there any artists or producers who influenced or contributed to the EP?
Influenced, I think my biggest influences are Balam Acab, M83, Clams Casino and Hans Zimmer. I didn’t realize how much it sounds similar to Hans, it wasn’t really my intention, but if I had to pick the closest sounding artist it would be him.
What were some significant limitations in the EP’s creation, and what was learned from them?
Mixing and then releasing independently on my own. The most challenging part of the production is actually mixing the thing. I have so many layers and sounds and reverbs in it that in the very beginning it sounds very mushy and hard to listen to. The songs are about 40% composing and 60% mixing. Lastly, releasing independently was difficult. I attempted to get it on a record label with no dice. I did it right by sending out hundreds of press releases a month before release, but little traction. It’s going to take some time to get it out into the world without having the proper connections, but that’s the reality with cold emailing in such a saturated market in modern day music.
How did you maintain creative momentum during difficult phases of the production?
There are times in the very beginning of creating these tracks where it doesn’t sound that great because it’s so mushy from all the tracks mixing together into one entity. I think I kept momentum by hearing that the final product could be good as long as I stuck with mixing and EQing enough. So the individual tracks can sit in the mix and be heard.
How did the tracks evolve from initial conception to final production?
Slowly like clay It starts out very abstract and slowly builds into a cohesive track. Most everything I make starts out as a short experiment, trying to see what happens and what comes out. I then listen to it back and decide if I want to move forward to completion.
How has working on the “Genesis EP” influenced your approach to music and art?
I realize the importance of seeing something through if you really believe in it. I think every creative endeavor seems a bit shaky or hard to believe in the initial stages.
Looking back, would you do anything differently in the production process?
I am pretty happy since I spent the time necessary to complete it. Moving forward I want to keep tightening up the sound. It is easy to mix and master something with 10-15 tracks or so, but when it gets to 70+ it becomes a tightrope to walk.
Can you elaborate on how you became interested in clothing design and visual arts?
I actually started out in visual arts. The first creative medium I worked in was video, making short films and abstract visuals. I’ve always wanted to direct movies so I ended up getting into video early on and it evolved into other creative fields. Doing the clothing design was just a natural progression of learning graphic design and coupling it with my video/photo production skills.
In what ways do your visual art projects influence the thematic elements of your music?
I think it’s actually the opposite way for me. The music inspires the visuals. It’s really easy to create emotion in music, so I find it a good starting point.
Could you discuss any specific video projects linked to the “Genesis EP” and their conceptual underpinnings?
I’ve been working with psychedelic visuals and creating my own models and workflows with Stable Diffusion. You can see the style on my Instagram. I plan on making a music video for each track, the Attunement video is about 80% done. I’ve been working with visuals for years now, with the current technology I am able to bring new ideas to life.
Are there particular graphic elements or motifs that fans should look for in the “Genesis EP” artwork?
Psychedelia
How do you see the integration of different art forms influencing your future projects?
I’m hoping all the creative art forms come together into something with more music and visuals. I have a movie script written which I am storyboarding now. That is currently my main focus.
What inspired you to venture into clothing design, and what themes do you explore through this medium?
Beauty and beauty, haha!
Are there any specific artists or designers in these fields who inspire your work?
Malika Favre. I love her work and ability to use simplicity. I also really appreciate Rupert Gruber’s work as well. Tycho was one of the reasons I made the jump into music, he has such a good eye for design and ear for music. He inspired me to believe I could do it too.
