Ayako Mori is a talented Japanese techno DJ, producer and the owner of three record labels. She started playing electronic music in Japanese clubs in 2000 all the way through to 2007.

Ayako Mori

The road led her to Europe, where she played in countries like Ireland, Poland, Czech and Germany, where she’s based until today in the city of Aachen.

Her first release “Brane World / Stereophonic Recordings” from 2013 has been chosen to “10 MUST HEAR MINIMAL TRACKS” on Beatport.

Ayako Mori continued performing around the globe and released tracks that shook the dancefloors and grabbed the attention of big artists in the techno scene, like Dave The Drummer who played her track on his Livestream.

She is the owner of three record labels “Physical Techno Recordings”, “Kalmary Rec”, “Unbekkant/ Label”.

It was a pleasure and a big honour to interview Ayako Mori at Underground Talent.

How did you start? What made you ?

I used to collect vinyl records and one of my friends, who’s a DJ, had turntables and a mixer for sale. The idea of testing them out on my collection made me buy it, that’s what has inspired my journey with DJing.

How do you describe your sound?

People were often comparing the sound of my sets to a Bass train. I totally agree with it as my mixes are not delicate, quite on the contrary. They’re rough and I think that their ruggedness is reminiscent of a bass train. And I like it!

How did you come up with your artist name?

It’s my real name 🙂

What is your favourite part of being a techno artist? Playing live? Creating music?

I don’t think of myself as an artist as such. I see myself as more of a “DJ track maker” and this is as whom I will answer your question. I am enjoying making techno tracks for the dancefloor, for the people.

When I hear another DJ playing out my production and see the crowd loving it, that is the biggest pleasure and satisfaction for me.

How do you handle your mistakes when you perform? Did you ever have any trouble managing them?

Yes, of course, mistakes can happen to anyone! When they happen to me, my face does not let anything on, haha!

What was the most stressful moment in the DJ booth, and how did you manage it?

I get very anxious before every one of my performances. My stress levels can get so high at times, they cause my hands to shake.

Unfortunately, there’s not much I can do about when it happens, so I just wait until it stops.

Where have you performed? Tell me about your favourite performance venues. Any upcoming shows?

Ayako Mori

I’ve performed in many countries and venues, places are always amazing, but they are all different, there’s something unique about each one of them so I can’t really name one or two.

Werkhaus (Minimal Force Free techno sunday, London UK)

Fold Club (London, UK)

Kitkat Club (Gegen Berlin, Berlin GE)

HÖR (As a Gegen Berlin resident, Berlin GE)

Csoa Forte prenestino ( Withes are Back, Rome IT)

Protokulture Klub (Gdansk PL)

Musicbunker Aachen (Aachen GE)

Helios 37 (Cologne GE)

Landbouwbelang (Maastricht NL)

How do you decide which track to play next? What makes them a good fit? How far do you plan ahead during your set?

Completely no plan.

I don’t have anything specific that determines which track to play next either, except a random play from the tracklist and my head agreeing with it.

If I think it fits, I play it next.

What release are you most proud of so far, and what projects are you currently working on?

That’s a tough one to choose from… Hmm, I think Physical Releases is what I’m proud of the most.

What projects are you currently working on? Any releases planned? Can you tell us about your latest LP/EP release?

I planned to be on a VA compilation for a long time, so in 2021 I joined forces with Gegen VA Compilation to work on a project.

One of my tracks was included on Fluctuat Records VA and Dave The Drummer played it during his Livestream.

I also have a single on Tholos Records VA under Sarah Strandberg’s label and something cooking for Durch VA.

Here are some of the remixes I made:

P.T.B.S. (De-Konstrukt Label)

Gladyshev (Hardwandler Records)

Natalino Nunes (Urban Chaos)

Christian Glitch (Parallel Thoughts Records)

Marco Ginelli (Wicked Ways)

Azogiař (Parallel Thoughts Records)

Mzperx (DSR Digital)

What do you think about the underground electronic music scene in London?

I think that Theo Komp and his party – Minimal Force showcase at Werkhaus – makes a very hot, new movement in the London Underground techno scene.

I hope that they will come back soon to the dancefloor! And Johnny Piras! His music is making some new techno style in London!!
